Chelsea is located along the first branch of the White River in central Vermont. It is a community with a rich history of agricultural traditions and civic-mindedness.

Our aim is to create and curate events and activities that encourage an appreciation for the arts and community, and offer opportunities for working regional artists to sell and display their work.

WE BELIEVE
Art should be inclusive.
Art should be shared and celebrated.
Art can bring people together.

We invite those of all ages and backgrounds to make their mark on the world.

ARTS ON THE GREEN MARKET & FESTIVAL

The Arts on the Green festival is held annually on the North Common in Historic Chelsea Village with participation from artists and artisans from all across New England. In 2019, the full day of music and activities drew over 800+ art lovers from the Upper Valley and beyond.

In 2020 & 2021 the festival was cancelled due to COVID restrictions, but we are returning this year, in 2022, for our 3rd annual event. We look forward to having you join us!

The Chelsea Community Barn Quilt Project was started in 2017 by Carrie Caouette-De Lallo and her daughter Sarah Caouette. It was intended to be an inclusive celebration of community arts and pride leading up to the first annual Chelsea Arts on the Green Market & Festival, held in the summer of 2018.

To date, there are more than 130 Barn Quilts in the First Branch Valley, and other neighboring Vermont communities have started their own projects!

An Effort to Create a Statewide Barn Quilt Map

The Green Mountain Quilters Guild invites quilters and non-quilters alike to an information session about
barn quilts on Saturday, September 10, 2022, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, at the Aldrich Public Library, Barre, VT 05641. The GMQG hopes to encourage and document barn quilts statewide with the aim of creating a comprehensive virtual self-guided tour.

Featured speakers will include Sharon Perry and Fern Mercure, coordinators of barn quilt activities in Franklin County, and Carrie Caouette-DeLallo and Sarah Caouette, of the Chelsea Arts Collective. The efforts of these four energetic people have resulted in the creation and documentation of over 400 barn quilts in Franklin County and more than 125 barn quilts in the Chelsea area. Learn how they got started, how they spread the word, and also the practical aspects of creating barn quilts that survive Vermont winters.

“We hope that people go home with information that inspires them to create their own barn quilts,” said GMQG president Marianne Kotch. “And because our ultimate goal is to create an online interactive map of barn quilt locations by county, we also hope they’ll be enthusiastic about contributing to the statewide list.”
While there is no charge for this information session, advance registration is suggested.

NORTH COMMON ARTS - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

It is with our hearts heavy, we decided it was necessary to close our doors permanently at North Common Arts & Cafe. It was an honor and a joy to offer a place where our community could gather and enjoy music, fine art and craft, literary events, and food created with locally-sourced ingredients.

These are uncertain times and it was difficult to see a path forward within our intimate space.
We would like to thank the many supporters of this endeavor; the extraordinarily talented artists, artisans, musicians, writers and the folks who came out to enjoy what was offered. We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to our local partners, farms, and vendors, who not only made thoughtfully-crafted food, drink, and ingredients accessible, but also lent so much support and encouragement throughout the life of our business. It was truly a shared labor of love, made possible because of the efforts of so many.

It is our hope to continue to host The Chelsea Arts on the Green Market & Festival. In addition, The Chelsea Community Barn Quilt Project has continued to grow in support, collaboration, and participation as individuals and groups are reaching out within and beyond our valley. You can view and download our latest edition of the Barn Quilt Trail map above or by clicking on the "Barn Quilt Project" tab at the top of this page.

It may be a difficult time forcing us to make difficult decisions, but we would like to offer a positive note for the future and our beloved community space. Taylor Katz and Misha Johnson, owners of Free Verse Farm in Chelsea, have since converted the former NCA space to expand their apothecary and open a farm store. We are thrilled to see small businesses in our community continue to thrive, have vision, and offer hope during these uncertain times. Info about their new biz can be found here: https://shop.freeversefarm.com/
